Laboratory Testing available at White Lotus Clinic

Our Naturopathic Clinic offers innovative and precise laboratory diagnostic testing to aid in your case workup. We will look over your existing bloodwork to avoid duplication before recommending tests for you. Your Naturopath will be careful only to recommend tests which will give unique insight to your case. An advanced lab test can often identify underlying concerns that may have previously gone undetected, which results in greatly improved outcomes.

Your Naturopathic Doctor will provide you with a lab kit which you will take to an external lab so your sample of blood can be drawn, and the kit will then be sent to the specialized lab. Alternately, some samples (such as saliva, urine, or stool) may be collected at home and the kit is then shipped to the lab.

The standard range of hormonal and other general blood tests are conducted by through Gamma Dynacare and Lifelabs.

In addition to standard hormone testing we also offer the following specialized functional diagnostic testing through labs such as:

  • Genova Diagnostics
  • Doctor’s Data
  • Rocky Mountain Analytical
  • Metametrix
  • Great Plains Laboratories
  • ZRT Laboratories
  • Diagnostic Solutions Laboratories
  • Cell Science Laboratories
  • Spectracell Laboratories

Tests are either completed through saliva samples, or through blood. Patients will have blood drawn at a local lab, and the samples are shipped directly to the diagnostic lab.

Please note that you must be a current patient in order to purchase any of the above testing from our clinic.

Test Highlights

We offer a large variety of tests, always customized to patients. Some of our most popular tests and panels are outlined below. If you are interested in knowing if we offer a specific test, please contact us because we offer many more not listed here!

The Dutch Complete is a comprehensive assessment of sex and adrenal hormones and their metabolites. It also includes the diurnal cortisol pattern, organic acids to detect Vitamin B12 and B6 deficiency, melatonin glutathione and markers of oxidative stress and DNA damage.

Female Fertility Testing

We often recommend a customized panel of tests to help understand why patients are not conceiving. Common tests we suggest for fertility patients include FSH, LH, Estradiol, Progesterone, Testosterone, DHEA-S, Cortisol, Sex Hormone Binding Globulin, Metabolic markers and a full thyroid panel including TSH, Free T3, Free T4 and Thyroid Antibodies. In particular, the thyroid and the adrenal gland, which have key roles in reproductive health may be overlooked by other fertility investigations.

Male Hormonal Health Testing

A comprehensive view for men’s hormonal health. This test includes Testosterone, DHEA-S, Estradiol, 4 point diurnal cortisol, Sex hormone binding globulin, PSA (Prostate specific antigen), and a full thyroid panel including Free T3 Free T4, TSH, and Thyroid Antibodies. Excellent for male fertility concerns, or general male health including andropause, low energy, and low libido

Antimullerian Hormone (AMH) – AMH Levels are thought to reflect the size of the remaining egg supply, or ovarian reserve. A very important test for women who are concerned about advanced reproductive age, or ovarian health. AMH levels are often elevated in PCOS

Full Thyroid Panel – The Thyroid Profile (free T4, free T3, Reverse T3, TSH, Anti TG and Anti TPO) can indicate the presence of an imbalance in thyroid function, which can cause a wide variety of symptoms, including feeling cold, low stamina, fatigue (particularly in the evening), depression, low sex drive, weight gain, and high cholesterol. Hypothyroidism can also be a cause of infertility and miscarriage. With a comprehensive view of the thyroid hormones, your naturopath can determine how to address the thyroid, if conversion is an issue, and if Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis (thyroid autoimmunity) may be involved.

Dried Urine Iodine – Iodine is an essential component of the thyroid hormones T4 and T3. About 90% of iodine consumed from any source (e.g., diet, supplements, medication) is eliminated in urine within 24-48 hours; therefore urine is an excellent source to determine an individual’s iodine status. When urine iodine levels are outside optimal ranges (too low or high), thyroid hormone synthesis can be abnormal. Therefore information about urinary iodine status could provide clues to your naturopath about thyroid dysfunction and the means to correct it (i.e., increase or lower iodine levels). This test can be added to the comprenensive thyroid profile or done alone.

Urine Iodine Bromine – Iodine was added to table salt (sodium chloride) decades ago in an effort to reduce the incidence of iodine deficiency. However, the use of table salt has declined due to increased consumption of high sodium, non-iodized processed foods. In addition, exposure to bromine through pesticides, medications and fire retardant chemicals has increased. An excess of bromine may compromise iodine status. A urine iodine bromine test can help determine whether you have sufficient iodine and whether excess bromine could be negatively impacting your iodine status.

Diurnal Cortisol Stress Test or Adrenal Fatigue Stress Test – Analyzes saliva samples throughout the day for levels of cortisol, providing important information about adrenal health. Cortisol is an indicator of adrenal function and exposure to stressors. Under normal circumstances, adrenal cortisol production shows a diurnal variation and is highest early in the morning, soon after waking, falling to lower levels in the evening. Normal cortisol production shows a healthy ability to respond to stress. Low cortisol levels can indicate adrenal fatigue (a reduced ability to respond to stressors), and can leave the body more vulnerable to poor blood sugar regulation and immune system dysfunction. Chronically high cortisol is a consequence of high, constant exposure to stressors, and this has serious implications for long-term health, including an increased risk of cancer, osteoporosis, and possibly Alzheimer’s disease. This is one of the most important tests to conduct in a naturopathic hormonal workup.

Please see picture below of an example of adrenal exhaustion diagnosed by this test. This patient has extreme chronic fatigue syndrome.

Nutritional and Metabolic Naturopathic Diagnostic Testing

Organic Acids – Organic acids are metabolic intermediates produced in pathways of central energy production, detoxification, neurotransmitter breakdown, and intestinal microbial activity. Accumulation of specific organic acids in urine often signals a metabolic inhibition or block. This abnormality may be due to a nutrient deficiency, an inherited enzyme deficit, toxic build-up, or drug effect. Essential for naturopathic assessments in neurological disorders and to assess metabolic dysfunction in the body.

Neurotransmitter Testing – This profile provides neurotransmitter assessment for patients with symptoms of neurotransmitter imbalances and includes: Epinephrine, Norepinephrine, Dopamine, Serotonin, Glycine, GABA, Glutamate, PEA, Histamine.

Neurotransmitter Oxidative Stress/Inflammation Testing – This panel includes neurotransmitters and other biomarkers associated with inflammation to analyze whether or not a patient is experiencing immune stress and/or oxidative stress. Because of kynurenic acid’s neuromodulatory character, it has been linked to the pathogenesis of a number of neurological conditions. Increased levels of glutamate, glycine, and DOPAC have been observed in inflammatory responses and neuro inflammatory disorders. Dysregulation of hydrogen sulfite homeostasis has been implicated in numerous pathological conditions and diseases.Includes the measurement of DOPAC, Glycine, Glutamate, Kynurenic Acid, Sulfite.

NutrEval – The NutrEval is an advanced diagnostic tool to aid naturopaths in helping patients overcome chronic conditions and realize the opportunity to live a longer, healthier life. Use this profile to more efficiently determine your overall nutritional status and better understand your disease risk. The innovative Interpretation at a Glance will provide clear recommendations for individualized treatment of vitamin, mineral, and essential co-factor deficiencies.

Essential Fats – Fats cover the nerves and cells – allowing communication, nerve conduction, and brain development to happen normally.

Simple Food Allergens – When the gut is inflamed and leaky, toxic chemicals can circulate and gather in the brain.

Celiac Disease – Immune reactions to gluten affect both mood and brain function.

Comprehensive Naturopathic Cardiovascular Profile 2.0 – Analyzes blood for levels of HDL, LDL, lipid fractionation, total cholesterol, ratios, triglycerides, lipoprotein(a), homocysteine, fibrinogen, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein. Includes Relative Risk Indices and Metabolic Syndrome Alerts. Together, these markers provide a thorough assessment of cardiovascular health status.
